Abstract
While working at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, I learnt that a fairly large number of women suffer from abnormal vaginal discharge. Can anything be done to restore a healthy vagina?
We developed a Polyherbal formulation employing Curcumin (diferuloyl methane), Aloe vera, purified extracts of Amla (Emblica Officinalis) and Neem (Azadirachta Indica) along with pharmacopially approved excipients. This formulation was named BASANT, which in India is the spring season. Curcumin is an important ingredient of the formulation besides others, and it has yellow hue.

Introduction
While working at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, I learnt that a fairly large number of women suffer from abnormal vaginal discharge. Can anything be done to restore a healthy vagina?
We developed a Polyherbal formulation employing Curcumin (diferuloyl methane), Aloe vera, purified extracts of Amla (Emblica Officinalis) and Neem (Azadirachta Indica) along with pharmacopially approved excipients [1]. This formulation was named BASANT, which in India is the spring season. Curcumin is an important ingredient of the formulation besides others, and it has yellow hue.
Figure 1 shows the transformation of the vagina of a woman suffering from abnormal vaginal discharge. The vaginal pH came down from 5 and above to normal 4.5. The formulation also exercised spermicidal action and the woman need not use any contraceptive device as and when she is using BASANT.
Figure 1: An illustrative representation of a typical woman suffering from recurring episodes of Vaginosis (2).
BASANT prevents the women getting undesirable genital infections, such as gonnorrhoeae and HIV.

Studies on inhibition of HIV were carried out by Gustavo Doncel at CONRAD Eastern Virginia Medical School Arlington, USA and Manoj Pastey at the University of Oregon, USA. Table 2 and Figure 2 show their findings.

Figure 2: Kinetics of HIV-1 Inhibition by BASANT in comparison to KY jelly and Enfuvirtide. TZM-bl cells were infected with HIV-1NL4-3 and then treated with either KY jelly or Basant or Enfuvirtide, hourly for four hours. HIV-1 Tat dependent β- galactosidase activity was measured at 405nm after two days. Treatment of cells with Basant is effective for up to three hours post-infection. Enfuvirtide continues to be effective at four hours post infection (3).
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
Another highly interesting action of BASANT is on HPV-16, which eventually causes Carcinoma of Cervix. Table 3 gives the results in 11 women. Each one of them became negative to HPV after inserting a capsule containing 245 mg of BASANT in the vagina every night for 30 days.

2. | 27 | 4+0 | +VE | NEGATIVE |
3. | 35 | 3+0 | +VE | NEGATIVE |

Conclusion
Transfer of BASANT to Industry
Given the full safety and high utility of BASANT to women for curing abnormal vaginal discharge and preventing horrible sexually communicated infections, BASANT was licensed to M/s Bipha Drugs, Pallipurathukavu Jn, Kottayam, Kerala, India. It is sold as Cream as well as Capsules.
